In early October 1973, she was arrested for stealing a car in Putney, Vermont, telling police the vehicle had run out of gas while she was traveling to
White River Junction to visit friends. She received probation and relocated to Brattleboro, where she lived at the Community House and worked at the Brattleboro Retreat psychiatric hospital.
On October 30, 1973, she unexpectedly left her job and residence in Brattleboro and was never heard from again—a disappearance that went unreported by her family to the Brattleboro Police Department until 2021. Before that, any missing person reports had been filed from another state, and Nancy effectively remained unlisted for nearly five decades.
Months later, on April 16, 1974, the remains of an unidentified woman were discovered in woodland off Route 124 in Marlborough, New Hampshire—about 22 miles from Brattleboro. Forensic examination estimated the victim’s death occurred in late fall 1973. She was described as a white female aged between 18 and 48, standing roughly 5′2″ to 5′6″ with reddish-brown hair. Clothing found on the body included a light brown corduroy coat with white fleece lining, a blue-gray zippered jacket, a plaid flannel shirt, off-white trousers, mismatched socks, work shoes, and insulated underwear. No identifying documents were present, and the cause and manner of death remained undetermined.
Her remains remained unidentified until forensic and DNA work between 2022 and 2024 linked them to Nancy’s siblings. The identification effort involved collaboration among the New Hampshire State Police Forensic Laboratory, NamUs, Bode Technology, and the University of North Texas Health Science Center. In July 2025 authorities officially announced that the Marlborough remains were those of Nancy Gale Erickson, resolving her decades‑long mystery and restoring her identity.
With her identity now confirmed, investigators are turning to piecing together what happened during Nancy’s final months. They are actively seeking information from anyone who may have known her in Brattleboro, especially at the Brattleboro Retreat in 1973 or at the Community House, as well as people who encountered her during her time in Tampa or at Corning Community College between 1971 and 1973.
