His family and friends grew concerned when he did not make contact, which was unusual for him.
The alarm was fully raised when Mahle failed to arrive in California for his son's birthday on March 14, an event for which he had made definite plans. This uncharacteristic absence prompted his family to report him as a missing person. At the time of his disappearance, Mahle was without a vehicle and was believed to be on foot. His case is further complicated by a pre-existing medical condition, arteriovenous malformation of the brain, which causes him to be partially paralyzed and experience seizures, putting him at risk for a brain hemorrhage.

He has several distinctive tattoos, including a full sleeve on his left arm dedicated to the Grateful Dead, a handicap symbol on his left wrist, and the words 'Carly Sunflower' tattooed across his chest. The right side of his body is paralyzed, causing him to walk with a limp, and he is left-handed. He was last seen wearing a tie-dye face mask, a blue puffy coat over a black coat, grey shorts, pants with a marijuana leaf print, tie-dye socks, and black Nike shoes. He was also wearing a grey hat with 'Park City' on it. The circumstances surrounding Paul Mahle's disappearance remain unclear, and his case is still considered unsolved.
