In the early summer of 2016, a sense of deep concern grew for the well-being of Derwin Beardy, a 45-year-old man from Garden Hill First Nation, Manitoba. He was last seen by those close to him on June 3rd in the town of Selkirk. It wasn't until June 26th that he was officially reported missing to the Selkirk RCMP, by which time a significant period had passed without any contact with his family or friends, a silence that was profoundly out of character. At the time of his disappearance, Beardy was described as being five-foot-eleven and weighing 154 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Authorities believed he could be in the Winnipeg area, as he was known to sometimes frequent shelters there. The news of his disappearance galvanized his community and family into action. Dozens of concerned residents from Garden Hill First Nation traveled to southern Manitoba to aid in the search for the missing man they cared for deeply. They tirelessly combed through bushes, fields, and along roadsides in and around the Selkirk area, desperate to find any clue that might lead to him. The search efforts were supported by the guidance of the Bear Clan Patrol, who instructed the volunteers in effective search techniques. The search was not confined to Selkirk; it also extended into the city of Winnipeg. As the search continued, police received and confirmed a sighting of Beardy on June 4th, near the intersection of Highway 59 and Provincial Road 317 in the vicinity of Libau, which is about 50 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg. This new information led the RCMP to express an "elevated concern for his safety." The passage of time did not diminish the anguish felt by Derwin Beardy's loved ones. Months after he was last seen, his wife of 24 years, Stephanie Beardy, spoke of the immense pain and anxiety his absence caused. The couple, who had been living in Brokenhead Ojibway Nation together, were described as being inseparable. The emotional toll on his wife was immense as she continued to search, even walking to a mission in Winnipeg every morning in the hope of finding him. Despite the dedicated searches by community members, family, and law enforcement, no helpful leads were found. The case of Derwin Beardy is a heart-wrenching account of a man who vanished, leaving behind a loving family and a community that banded together in a determined effort to bring him home. The lack of answers has left a void for those who knew him, and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unresolved.
