In the winter of 1984, the life of Robert Dillon White, a 37-year-old man from Tennessee, took a mysterious and unsettling turn. At the end of January, he flew from Knoxville to Memphis for a construction job. From there, he embarked on a journey in a motor home to New Orleans, Louisiana, to look into another work opportunity. The last known communication from Robert was a phone call to his brother on a Friday night, the exact date of which remains uncertain.
In that call, he mentioned his intention to drive back to Memphis to let a superintendent go home. However, Robert never arrived in Memphis and was never heard from again. The last person to have reportedly seen him was the superintendent in New Orleans, sometime between February 3rd and 4th, 1984.
Concerned for his well-being, some of Robert's family members traveled to Louisiana in an attempt to find him. Their search led them to a grim discovery in the vicinity of the Hammonds/Manchac area. There, they found the motor home Robert had been traveling in, partially submerged in a lake. The front of the vehicle was in the water, with the back bumper caught on a retaining wall, preventing it from being fully engulfed. This discovery only deepened the mystery surrounding Robert's disappearance. The scene within the motor home was equally perplexing.
Inside the partially submerged vehicle, investigators and family members found several of Robert's personal belongings. His work boots were present, one of which was uniquely cut on the side, a modification Robert made to alleviate pain from a foot injury. Also found were his briefcase, which still contained contracts and money, and his firearms. A peculiar detail that stood out to investigators was a stick found wedged between the front seat and the accelerator. Robert's family noted that he often drove without his boots on due to the discomfort from his old injury. The collection of these items, left behind in such a strange manner, created a confusing and troubling picture of his last known moments.
