In the spring of 1978, a 22-year-old man named Randy Stewart Doran embarked on a journey that would lead to his mysterious disappearance. A former Marine, Randy was known for his nomadic spirit and love for hitchhiking across the country. He was a creative soul who enjoyed playing the guitar, writing songs, and crafting poetry. Originally from California, Randy's travels had previously taken him to Nevada and Florida. His decision to leave home in March 1978 came after a disagreement with his uncle, telling him he "wouldn't be back until he made it". This desire for a fresh start led him to hitchhike south, eventually arriving in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a brief stop in Florida to visit his grandmother. It was in the vibrant city of New Orleans that the trail of Randy Doran would grow cold, leaving his family with decades of unanswered questions. Upon his arrival in New Orleans, Randy seemed to be settling into his new life. He found work, possibly on a shipping dock or the SS President riverboat. He reached out to his family to let them know he was doing well. He sent a postcard to his aunt, reassuring her that he was eating and sleeping well, and had made a couple of friends. In early April 1978, he also made a phone call to his aunt, reiterating that he was working on a shipping dock. This communication was the last his family would ever have with him. At the time of his disappearance, Randy was described as being 5'11" and weighing around 160 pounds, with brown, collar-length wavy hair and blue or hazel eyes. A noticeable scar marked his upper lip. The circumstances surrounding Randy Doran's disappearance remain shrouded in mystery. In the time leading up to his vanishing, he had developed a newfound devotion to religion, often preaching to friends and carrying a small pocket Bible. This has led to speculation that he may have joined a nomadic religious group, which were common at the time. When his family initially tried to report him missing, they were met with resistance from law enforcement, who were hesitant to open a case for an adult who had left of his own accord. Although a report was eventually filed, it seemingly fell through the cracks for many years. Despite the passage of time, the case remains open, with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office in California handling the investigation. DNA from Randy's family members has been submitted to national databases in the hope that it might one day lead to a break in the case. The disappearance of Randy Doran is a poignant story of a young man who set out in search of a new beginning, only to vanish without a trace, leaving behind a legacy of unanswered questions and a family still searching for closure.
