Charles Gazzam Hurd, a 32-year-old man, vanished from Manhattan, New York, on February 18, 1937. At the time of his disappearance, he was the manager of the real estate and mortgage department for Dows Estates, Inc., located in the 10 block of Williams Street. Hurd, who was separated from his wife, was a member of a well-known New York family. He was residing at the Kenmore Hall Hotel at the time.
On the day he went missing, Hurd followed his usual routine, leaving work at the end of the business day. He later had dinner by himself at a restaurant and nightclub on East 54th Street, where he also cashed a small check before leaving. The last known event of that evening occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. when Hurd crashed his Ford convertible coupe, which had a New Jersey license plate number I-E 65231, into a pillar of an elevated railway at 3rd Avenue and 37th Street.
Despite the collision, Hurd appeared to have sustained only minor injuries and was able to drive away from the scene of the accident. He has not been seen or heard from since that moment. His vehicle was also never recovered. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as being 5'10" tall and weighing 180 pounds, with brown hair and blue/grey eyes. He was last seen wearing a gray overcoat, a gray fedora, and tan shoes.
