On a winter evening in New York, just a few months after the city's landscape and psyche were irrevocably altered, 28-year-old Fatih Algul's life took a turn into bewildering uncertainty. On December 27, 2001, the man known to some as Frank finished his shift as a manager at the "Garden of Eden," a gourmet market on Montague Street in Brooklyn. His loved ones later described his state that evening as "trance-like" as he departed from his workplace around 8:30 p.m. Algul, a male of White/Caucasian ethnicity with brown hair and green eyes, was last seen wearing his work attire: a chef's coat with the "Garden of Eden" logo, a blue shirt, and khaki pants. From the market, he entered a subway station in Brooklyn Heights and boarded the number 2 train, seemingly on his way to Manhattan. The journey on the subway that night holds some of the last known moments of Fatih Algul's public life. A co-worker who was on the same train spotted Algul and attempted to engage him in conversation, but Algul did not respond. In a move that has puzzled investigators and his family ever since, he unexpectedly exited the train at the Wall Street station, a stop that was not on his usual route home. He was never seen or heard from again. In the period leading up to his disappearance, Algul had been grappling with severe depression, a condition that developed following the tragic death of his mother in an automobile accident. He had been prescribed medication to help manage his mental health struggles. In the years that have passed, the disappearance of Fatih Algul has remained an unsolved case, leaving his family with lingering questions and a void of unanswered grief. Several theories have been considered by his loved ones. Given that his disappearance occurred in the tense atmosphere of post-9/11 New York, his family has wondered if he might have been detained by the FBI as a suspected terrorist, a fate that befell some men of Middle Eastern descent during that period; however, the FBI has denied having him in their custody. Another possibility they have considered is that he may have suffered a nervous breakdown. Despite these hypotheses, no evidence has emerged to strongly support any single theory. The investigation, handled by the Ridgefield Police Department in New Jersey, remains open. The case is a sorrowful puzzle: a young man, burdened by grief and reportedly in a disassociated state, took a subway ride and vanished into the heart of the city, leaving behind only questions and an enduring mystery.
