On a summer day in 1938, four-year-old Hickle Harley Ware, known affectionately as "Punky," was with his two older brothers, ages ten and thirteen, in a meadow near their family farm in Bungo Township, Minnesota. It was between noon and 1:00 p.m. on June 11th when his brothers went to round up some cattle, telling young Hickle to stay put until they came back. When they returned just a few minutes later, the little boy with blond hair and blue eyes was gone.
He was last seen wearing a blue and white striped shirt and tan overalls, but no shoes or socks.
The family was initially not overly alarmed, as Hickle had a habit of wandering into the nearby woods, but he was always found a short distance away, sometimes found sleeping near a building. His parents searched for him throughout the afternoon and into the night, but this time, he did not turn up. By 6:00 a.m. the next morning, the authorities were called in to assist with the search. What followed was a massive search effort, described as one of the largest manhunts in northern Minnesota's history at the time. Around 1,500 people, including the National Guard and the Civilian Conservation Corps, scoured the dense woods and swampy terrain. Tracker dogs and an airplane were also utilized in the desperate search for the missing child. Unfortunately, a rainstorm on June 13th washed away any potential tracks, hindering the search efforts.
Despite the extensive search and the passage of many decades, no trace of Hickle Harley Ware has ever been found. Over the years, various theories and rumors circulated, including the possibility of kidnapping. A neighbor reported seeing two unfamiliar men in the area, and a farmer claimed to have seen a crying boy in a truck on the day Hickle vanished. However, law enforcement largely dismissed the kidnapping theory due to the remote and inaccessible location where he was last seen. The prevailing belief held by the sheriff at the time was that Hickle likely wandered off and succumbed to the elements on the same day he disappeared. The case grew cold, leaving a lasting impact on his family. His parents and siblings have since passed away, but a niece continues to hold out hope for answers in her uncle's long-unsolved disappearance.
