A fishing trip off the coast of Alaska turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for a family when 61-year-old Robert Solis of Canoga Park, California, went missing. On May 28, 2023, Solis, his partner Brandi Tyau, her sister Danielle Agcaoili, and Danielle's husband, Maury Agcaoili, were on a charter fishing vessel, the F/V Awakin, in Sitka Sound. The 30-foot aluminum boat, captained by Morgan Robidou, was reported overdue on Sunday evening after it failed to return to the Kingfisher Lodge. Later that evening, the vessel was discovered partially submerged near Low Island, about 10 miles west of Sitka. The area was experiencing rough seas at the time, with waves reported to be between six and eleven feet. The U.S. Coast Guard initiated a search and rescue operation covering 825 square miles over more than 20 hours. Tragically, the body of Maury Agcaoili was found unresponsive in the water near the boat on the evening of May 28th and he was later pronounced deceased. The bodies of Danielle Agcaoili and Brandi Tyau were recovered from inside the boat's cabin on May 31st. Several days later, on June 8th, the body of the boat's captain, Morgan Robidou, was also recovered in the Low Island area. Despite the extensive search efforts, Robert Solis remained missing. A subsequent investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard concluded that the most likely cause of the incident was the sudden flooding of the Awakin's well deck by a large swell. Investigators believe the boat's proximity to Low Island in shallow water during low tide increased its vulnerability to large swells and breaking surf. The investigation suggested that the boat's captain may have been one of the first individuals swept overboard, leaving the passengers in a dire situation. Although the boat was eventually salvaged and returned to Sitka, search efforts for Robert Solis were suspended and transitioned to a reactive search pending any new information. The case remains a sorrowful reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the profound loss experienced by the families involved.
