In the winter of 1987, a 21-year-old woman named Tammy G. Fields was living in an apartment on Topping Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. On a January afternoon, she told her roommate she was stepping out to run an errand and would be back by 4:00 p.m. She left her home around 1:40 p.m. wearing a black leather jacket, black jeans, and white Nike athletic shoes.
