On the morning of Saturday, August 24, 2002, 71-year-old Shirley McKeown was seen leaving her residence in Kansas City, Missouri. It was around 9:30 a.m. when she departed, intending to drive to her daughter's house, which was only about seven miles away. Shirley was actively helping her daughter with the remodeling of her new home and had arranged to supervise painters that morning. She was a retired nurse, known to be in excellent health and had a pacemaker.
Her daughter was not home that weekend, and when Shirley failed to arrive, concern began to grow. The trip should have been a short one, but Shirley never made it to her destination.
The day after Shirley was last seen, her daughter attempted to contact her multiple times without success. Growing worried, she reached out to her mother's neighbors, who reported that Shirley's dog had been left outside all night and her Sunday newspaper was still in the yard. This was highly uncharacteristic of the responsible and caring woman. Her daughter discovered the back door of Shirley's home unlocked. Recognizing that her mother would never neglect her pet or leave without informing anyone, she officially reported Shirley missing on August 25. In the days that followed, there was no activity on her bank accounts or credit cards. The search for Shirley took a grim turn on September 3, when her white 1990 Cadillac Deville was found abandoned in a vacant lot. The vehicle was deliberately concealed behind trees and covered with a tarp and branches.
The discovery of the car confirmed the family's worst fears. Inside the vehicle, investigators found a significant amount of Shirley's blood in the backseat, a quantity that led them to believe she could not have survived her injuries. The specialized Missouri conservation license plates, which read 'MCQ-N,' had been removed from the car and have never been found. In the wake of this discovery, police received a tip from a man regarding the vehicle, and another individual who had been in possession of some of Shirley's belongings was questioned. However, no charges have been filed in direct connection with her disappearance. Law enforcement has stated that foul play is suspected, and the case is being investigated as a homicide. The prevailing theory held by her daughter is that she may have been the victim of a carjacking.
