In the winter of 1997, 62-year-old John Sapienza vanished from his life in St. Johnsville, New York, leaving behind a home, a business, and a family who say he would never have just walked away. He was last seen on February 24, 1997, a period of significant personal turmoil for him. Sapienza was in the midst of a contentious separation from his wife and had just had an argument with her. Friends and family were aware of his plan to drive his 1997 Chevrolet Astro van to California to visit his daughter. This trip, however, would seemingly never be completed. Approximately one month after he was last seen, Sapienza's van was discovered abandoned in a grocery store parking lot in New Hartford, New York. A manager at the store confirmed the vehicle had been sitting there for about four weeks. It was a friend, not his wife, who reported him missing on February 27, after being notified by Sapienza's wife that the van had been found. Concern for his welfare grew as days turned into weeks with no word, a silence that was deeply out of character for the man his daughter described as being very attached to his money and possessions. The circumstances surrounding John Sapienza's disappearance are considered suspicious by law enforcement. His daughter firmly believes he was the victim of foul play and would not have voluntarily left his life behind. Adding to the mystery, it was discovered that his estranged wife had filed a power of attorney five days after his van was found, giving her control over his finances. She subsequently withdrew a significant amount of money from his accounts and moved to Las Vegas with a new boyfriend. In a bizarre and unsettling twist, an unknown individual later provided the Social Security Administration with a death certificate for John Sapienza, stating he had died on April 15, 1998, though no body has ever been found. The investigation into his disappearance remains open, a long-standing cold case that continues to trouble investigators and leave his loved ones without answers.
