On a summer afternoon in June of 1989, 53-year-old George F. Mateo was enjoying a day of fishing along the north side of the Mohawk River in Amsterdam, New York. He was last seen near Lock 10 of the barge canal around 1:00 p.m. on June 10th. At the time of his disappearance, George was described as a white male, standing at 5'8" and weighing 160 pounds, with gray hair and blue eyes. He was reportedly wearing a dark-colored baseball cap and carrying a backpack. At that point in his life, he was residing in a local hotel in Amsterdam. The day after George Mateo was last seen, his car was discovered abandoned. The vehicle was found on Conrail property, which was located on the opposite side of the Mohawk River from where he had been fishing. This discovery prompted an extensive search of the river and the surrounding areas in an effort to find any trace of the missing man. Despite the thorough search efforts, no sign of George Mateo was found, and he has not been heard from since that day in 1989. The investigation into George Mateo's disappearance has remained open for over three decades. New York State Police have continued to seek information from the public that might lead to a resolution in this long-unsolved case. His case is classified as a "lost/injured missing" person, and despite the passage of time, authorities have not given up hope of finding answers. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain a mystery, leaving his family without closure. The official investigation continues, with law enforcement periodically renewing calls for any information that could finally shed light on what happened to George Mateo.
