In the early morning hours of February 24, 1997, 18-year-old Crystal Kipper was driving home to Kansas City, Missouri, after spending the evening ice skating with a friend in St. Joseph. Despite her car's low-fuel light being on, she believed she had enough gas to make the trip. Tragically, her vehicle ran out of fuel, leaving her stranded on the southbound shoulder of Interstate 29 near State Route 371 in Platte County. She was last seen at approximately 2:20 a.m.
A truck driver later reported seeing a young woman who matched Crystal's description appearing distraught and attempting to flag down traffic. The same witness also saw another vehicle backing up on an exit ramp toward her car. When Crystal's mother found her abandoned Ford Probe the next morning, the hazard lights were still blinking, the battery was low, and the car was out of gas. There was no sign of Crystal.
Several months later, a significant breakthrough in the case came from an unlikely source. While investigating the kidnapping and sexual assault of another woman, authorities searched the Kansas City residence of a convicted sex offender named John E. Williams. Inside his home, they discovered several of Crystal's personal belongings, including her identification cards, a pay stub, car keys, and the clothing she was last seen wearing. DNA testing confirmed the clothes belonged to Crystal, and their condition suggested she had been the victim of a homicide. Williams had also disturbingly spliced news reports about her disappearance into pornographic videos.
When questioned by investigators, John E. Williams claimed he had accidentally struck and killed Crystal with his vehicle on I-29 the night she vanished. He said he panicked and disposed of her body. However, authorities were skeptical of his account, in part because his windshield was repaired the day after her disappearance, and they believed the damage was more consistent with a struggle, as if someone had kicked it from the inside. Williams briefly led investigators to an area in Platte City, but no remains were found, and he refused to provide any more information about her location. Before he could be formally charged with Crystal's murder, Williams took his own life in his jail cell in April 1999. He left no note and took the secret of Crystal's whereabouts with him.
