In the spring of 1988, in the quiet community of Boyne Falls, Michigan, 69-year-old Victoria Marie Salisz, known affectionately as Vicky, vanished. The last known sighting of her was on April 15, 1988, when her brother-in-law saw her walking in the backyard of her DeNise Road home. The date, however, is considered tentative as she lived with her husband who experienced memory lapses. Concern grew when Vicky, a dependable waitress at Pippin's Restaurant in nearby Boyne City, failed to show up for her shifts for three consecutive days. Her boss reported her missing, prompting an investigation by the Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office. When authorities arrived at her residence, they found a scene that was both ordinary and unsettling. Her car was parked in the driveway, and inside the house, her purse and keys were left on the dining room table, yet Victoria was nowhere to be found. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as a white female with graying brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'5" and weighing around 165 pounds. She wore eyeglasses and was last seen in a rust or maroon-colored full-length coat, brown pants, and a tightly knitted hat with a brim. The investigation into Victoria's disappearance soon turned towards her son, Stephen Salisz Jr., who was reportedly camping in the woods behind his mother's home around the time she went missing. Authorities believed he might hold more information about her fate than he was revealing. In January 1991, a grand jury was convened to investigate the case, and Stephen was called to testify. He refused to appear and subsequently disappeared with his girlfriend, Beth Webb, arming themselves with weapons, including homemade grenades. After being found a month later, a tense one-hour standoff with police ensued, leading to their arrest. During his competency hearing, Stephen made bizarre claims, stating he was a Green Beret on a secret CIA mission to protect the U.S. from a Nazi invasion, and that his mother was a Nazi. Despite being treated at a psychiatric facility and eventually being deemed competent to stand trial, both Stephen and his girlfriend were convicted on multiple charges, including assault and resisting arrest, and served prison time. However, neither ever provided any information regarding Victoria's disappearance. Over the years, the case grew cold, though law enforcement continued to pursue any leads. In October 2020, the FBI joined the investigation, offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that could lead to solving the case. This renewed effort has reportedly generated some promising new leads. The overview of this case is one of enduring mystery and unanswered questions. Victoria Salisz, a grandmotherly figure well-liked by those who knew her, vanished without a trace from her own property. The suspicious circumstances, including her personal belongings being left behind and the subsequent actions of her son, have led investigators to believe that she met with foul play. Despite the passage of decades and the lack of resolution, the investigation into her disappearance remains open.
