Sharon Zelinski McCully, a 25-year-old woman from Austin, Texas, was last seen on December 11, 1984. She had spent the day Christmas shopping and had lunch with her husband, whom she dropped off at his job around 1:40 p.m. McCully was driving her off-white 1965 Volkswagen Beetle, which had a distinctive orange hood and was missing its front bumper.
The vehicle was later found two days after her disappearance, abandoned at an apartment complex on Research Boulevard, approximately five miles from her last known location. The car was unlocked, and McCully's purse, containing $170, was missing, along with the keys. There was no sign of a struggle, although a few partial fingerprints were discovered in the vehicle.
Despite initial reports suggesting that McCully may have been seen with a man near the complex, the tip was never fully confirmed, and no strong leads have emerged. McCully, a licensed vocational nurse with aspirations of attending medical school, lived with her husband in an apartment at the time. Authorities have long suspected foul play in her disappearance, although her husband passed a polygraph test and claimed they had a happy marriage.
