Jon Evans Ottesen, a 61-year-old man, was last seen on September 5, 1999, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He had planned to hike in the Black Range of the Gila National Forest. Ottesen's pickup truck was later found abandoned along a well-traveled road in the area where he intended to hike, but there was no trace of him. At the time of his disappearance, Ottesen was wearing tan corduroy pants, a hand-knit ski hat, and hiking boots. He also wore glasses and had a beard.
