Sean Patrick Friel, 28 years old, was last seen on March 20, 2004, after checking out of a Marriott hotel in Solana Beach, California. Friel had been preparing to move to Los Angeles for a new job as a computer programmer. Described as a mild-mannered and calm individual, Friel had attended Zen and Buddhist retreats prior to his disappearance, leading some to speculate that he may have deliberately vanished to simplify his life.
On March 30, 2004, Friel's 1993 gray Nissan truck was found abandoned near the entrance of Torrey Pines State Reserve, on the Pacific Coast Highway. Inside the truck were his passport, luggage, computer, and cellphone. Later, searchers discovered Friel’s shoes, socks, and eyeglasses neatly placed near a cliff overlooking the ocean. These belongings were found after several days of rain, but the items, including the glasses, showed no signs of water damage, adding to the mystery.
Despite an extensive search, no trace of Friel has been found since. His credit cards were later used in Brazil, though it remains unclear who used them.
