Steven Romero, a 61-year-old man from Magdalena, New Mexico, was last seen on April 14, 2008. He left home that day for a doctor's appointment in Albuquerque but never arrived. Financial records indicate that Romero was still active after his appointment, as he was spotted at a bank in Albuquerque around 2:00 p.m. on April 14. The next day, he was recorded having breakfast in Grants, New Mexico.
Romero's blue 2003 Ford Ranger was discovered on April 16 along State Route 117, south of Grants. Two tires on the truck were deflated but undamaged. Inside the vehicle, personal items such as food, water, a baseball cap, and his walking stick were found, but his GPS device, identification, and backpack were missing. Despite being an avid hiker and in otherwise good health, Romero suffered from mild adult-onset muscular dystrophy, which affected his gait.
