Blake Slaughter, 56 years old at the time, went missing on August 3, 2017, while camping in a national forest near Cottonwood Canyon, just east of McGaffey and southwest of Thoreau, New Mexico. He was last seen walking away from his campsite and fellow campers. Blake was familiar with the area, as he frequently visited it for solitude and relaxation.
