Blake Slaughter, 56 years old at the time, went missing on August 3, 2017, while camping in a national forest near Cottonwood Canyon, just east of McGaffey and southwest of Thoreau, New Mexico. He was last seen walking away from his campsite and fellow campers. Blake was familiar with the area, as he frequently visited it for solitude and relaxation.

At the time of his disappearance, Blake was wearing a tan camouflage-print jacket, a blue long-sleeved Levi's shirt, jeans, black cowboy boots, and a black cowboy hat. He also wore a large silver bracelet on his right wrist. He had gray hair, green eyes, and sometimes sported a mustache. His left ear was pierced, and he wore eyeglasses with brown metal frames.

Despite an extensive search and rescue operation, no clues were found regarding his whereabouts, and his case remains unsolved. Authorities remain concerned due to the remote nature of the location and the amount of time that has passed without any signs of him.
