In the spring of 1986, 22-year-old Jack D. Dowdy Jr. was in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to attend a union trade school for a brief five-day period. He had made arrangements to stay with his cousin from May 11th to May 15th while he completed his schooling. On the evening of May 11th, Dowdy dropped off his girlfriend at her mother's home in the city and proceeded to his cousin's residence for the night. He attended his classes as scheduled on May 12th.
