Jakari Hogan, a 23-year-old male from Shreveport, tragically lost his life on January 30, 2022, in Cherokee County, Texas. Hogan, along with 20-year-old Ronnie Pearson, was found dead from apparent gunshot wounds on Highway 79 East at the Cherokee and Rusk County line. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office received a call early that morning from the Rusk County Sheriff's Office about two injured men found on the side of the road.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered that both men had succumbed to their injuries.
Following an extensive investigation, Devon Harris, a resident of Shreveport, was arrested in October 2022 for the deaths of Hogan and Pearson. Witnesses reported that Harris and the victims were friends who had been returning to Louisiana after a trail ride in Cherokee County when an argument broke out. Harris allegedly pulled the car over, retrieved a pistol, and shot both Pearson and Hogan. After the shooting, Harris attempted to move Hogan's body to the shoulder of the road but fled the scene when a passing motorist stopped to assist and mentioned calling 911.
Harris was later found and arrested in Mesquite, Texas, and was charged with capital murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office had issued a warrant for Harris' arrest in February 2022, considering him armed and dangerous at the time.
The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the crime and the subsequent legal proceedings. Harris' conviction brought some closure to the families of the victims, although the loss of Hogan and Pearson remains a tragic event.
