Matthew Mefford, a 46-year-old man, tragically lost his life on January 28, 2025, in Henderson, Texas. The incident occurred in Rusk County, where authorities responded to reports of a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Mefford with a gunshot wound to the head. He was initially transported to a hospital in Henderson before being airlifted to Tyler for further medical care.
Despite efforts to save him, Mefford ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators identified James Dillon Little as the suspect in the shooting. According to arrest documents, the fatal encounter took place in Little’s driveway. Surveillance footage revealed that Little approached a truck where Mefford was standing, leading to a heated argument. During the confrontation, Little forcefully shoved Mefford down the side of the vehicle. As Mefford stumbled with his back turned, Little retrieved a handgun and fired a single round, striking Mefford in the back of the head. Authorities believe the altercation stemmed from a dispute over a woman who was present at the scene.
Following the shooting, Mefford was placed on life support but did not survive. Little was taken into custody and charged with murder. He is currently being held in the Rusk County Jail with a bond set at $1 million. Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
