Peggy Joyce Rusness, aged 41, went missing on April 3, 1976, from her farm in Wolf Lake, Minnesota. That evening, a fire engulfed her home, destroying it completely. Inside the remains of the house, firefighters found the body of her eight-year-old son, Brian, and the remains of two family dogs. However, Peggy and her common-law husband, Bernard Rusness, were not found in the debris. Investigators concluded that the couple had likely survived the fire.
Earlier that day, Peggy and Bernard had gone grocery shopping together and returned home in the afternoon. Bernard was seen working on his truck and left the hood up, planning to finish the job the next day. All the vehicles at their home were found with the keys still in the ignition, and the couple left behind about $1,000 in their bank accounts, along with uncollected paychecks from their jobs.
