In the late winter of 1979, a 15-year-old girl named Brenda Cecelia Crowley vanished from Staten Island, New York. The exact date of her disappearance is uncertain, with reports ranging from March 1, 1979, to February or March of 1980. Brenda was one of eight children living in a troubled home. She and her siblings frequently ran away from their various residences on Staten Island, but Brenda was the only one who never returned. At the time she went missing, Brenda was known to spend time in the Tompkinsville, Stapleton, and Mariner's Harbor areas of Staten Island. She had been enrolled as a special education student at Curtis High School but had stopped attending and was marked as "absent without leave" in February 1980. Distinctive features included a slight cross in her left eye and a small scar on her nose. Her eye color was noted as green or hazel, and sometimes appeared brown. The circumstances surrounding Brenda's home life were difficult. Her mother and stepfather were reportedly alcoholics, and her biological father was incarcerated around the time she disappeared.
