On January 22, 2024, at approximately 6:30 a.m., 18-year-old Jesus E. Zamores was fatally shot during a failed drive-by shooting in northwest Harris County, near Houston, Texas. Zamores and his 14-year-old cousin were in a stolen black Hyundai Sonata, targeting a 16-year-old boy waiting at a bus stop near East Marsham Circle and Antoine Drive. The cousins made two attempts to shoot the teenager, who managed to escape unharmed.
During the second attempt, the 14-year-old, seated in the passenger seat, accidentally shot Zamores as he fired out of the driver's side window. This caused Zamores to lose control of the vehicle, crashing it into a nearby house. He was found dead in the driver's seat with gunshot wounds. The 14-year-old fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended and charged with felony murder.
The Hyundai Sonata used in the incident had been reported stolen the previous night from a residence about two miles away. The motive behind the attempted shooting remains unclear, though the mother of the intended target indicated that the individuals involved had previously been friends before a recent argument. No injuries were reported among the occupants of the house struck by the vehicle, nor among bystanders at the bus stop.
The 14-year-old suspect was taken into custody and booked into the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center. Due to his age, authorities have not released his identity. The investigation is ongoing as officials work to piece together the events leading up to this tragic incident.
