Shelton John Sanders, a 25-year-old University of South Carolina student, was last seen on the evening of June 19, 2001, in Columbia, South Carolina. Shelton was planning a bachelor party for a friend and had visited several hotels with his former roommate, Mark Richardson, to arrange accommodations for the event. He last spoke to his family around 9:00 p.m., informing them he was heading home to Rembert, South Carolina, but he never arrived.
