On a Tuesday evening in June, a young University of South Carolina student named Shelton John Sanders made a routine phone call to his family in Rembert, South Carolina, letting them know he would be home late from Columbia. This was not unusual for the 25-year-old, who was diligently commuting to Columbia for both his studies and his job as a computer systems manager at the university's medical school.
