In the winter of 2006, a young man named Zachary A. Aylsworth, 22 years old at the time, vanished in Cincinnati, Ohio, under alarming circumstances. On that particular day, his life took a dramatic turn as he became embroiled in a police pursuit. Reports from that time indicate that while his vehicle was still moving at a slow speed on the Brent Spence Bridge, he made the desperate decision to exit the car. Eyewitness accounts and police reports state that he then went over a concrete barrier and plunged into the cold waters of the Ohio River, an estimated 110 to 115 feet below. He was reportedly not wearing a shirt at the time he jumped. In the immediate aftermath, there were brief reports of him being seen in the water, but he soon disappeared from sight and has not been seen or heard from since. At the time of his disappearance, Zachary was a resident of West Chester, Ohio. He was described as a white male with brown hair and brown eyes. He had a beard, a significant amount of chest hair, and his hair, which was beginning to recede, was shoulder-length. Distinctive features included scars on both of his wrists, and he was known to wear eyeglasses. Friends and family also noted that he was dealing with an unspecified medical condition for which he was receiving care from a doctor. The clothing he was thought to be wearing consisted of blue jeans. The events leading up to the chase that ended so tragically on the Brent Spence Bridge suggest a period of great distress for Zachary. Authorities at the time suspected him of attempting to carjack two vehicles and being involved in an altercation at a gas station before the police chase began. An officer's attempt to use a taser was unsuccessful, and the pursuit ensued. The case of Zachary Aylsworth is a heartbreaking one that leaves many unanswered questions for his family and the community. Despite the passage of time, his case officially remains unsolved, a lingering mystery of a young life that took a desperate and public turn. The Cincinnati Police Department continues to hold the case file, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact them.
