Richard Nils McMichael Jr. was 54 years old when he was last seen in Mentor, Ohio, in the autumn of 2016. At the time of his disappearance, he stood between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighed between 180 and 190 pounds, and had brown hair with a mustache and hazel eyes. When he vanished, it is believed that he did not have any form of identification on him, such as a driver's license or birth certificate. This lack of identification has been a significant challenge in the efforts to locate him. He was last seen on foot and had no vehicle. Before he went missing, Richard had mentioned to his family that he might be traveling to the Akron, Ohio, area. There was also a suggestion that he might seek out a warmer climate to address some personal issues he was facing. Despite these potential destinations, there have been no confirmed sightings of him since the day he disappeared. The Mentor Police Department opened an investigation into his disappearance, with a report being filed in January of 2018. To aid in the investigation, DNA samples were collected from his mother and brother and have been entered into national databases. The years following Richard's disappearance have yielded very few new leads, and his case remains an unsolved mystery. The absence of any significant developments has been difficult for his family, who continue to hope for answers. The investigation has been hampered by the limited information available surrounding the circumstances of his disappearance. With no confirmed sightings and no use of his personal identification, the trail grew cold quickly. The overview of this case is one of a man who seemingly walked away from his life with very little to trace his movements, leaving his loved ones with unanswered questions and the enduring pain of not knowing what happened to him.
