In early April 2016, the life of 31-year-old Jautoun Baber took a turn that would leave his family searching for answers for years to come. A resident of the Cincinnati, Ohio area, Jautoun was a welder by trade and a dedicated son who had moved back to Forest Park from New Orleans to help care for his ailing grandmother. He was a father to three children and maintained a close relationship with his mother, Loretta Baber, with whom he communicated frequently. Described as a good son, Jautoun's sudden and unexplained disappearance has left a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. The last time his family saw him was on April 1, 2016, just before a trip that would become the focal point of a heart-wrenching mystery. The known timeline of Jautoun's last movements begins on April 3, 2016, when he traveled from Ohio to Lake Charles, Louisiana. His family has stated that he was accompanied on this trip by his cousin, Deonte Baber. Text messages were sent from Jautoun's phone to his mother until the early morning of April 8, 2016. The messages indicated that he was on his way back to Ohio and had arrived safely. However, after that final communication, Jautoun's phone went silent, and he was never heard from again. His family knew something was wrong, as it was highly uncharacteristic for him to go more than a few days without contacting them. Adding to the mystery, the car he had been driving was later found abandoned in Cincinnati. As the investigation into Jautoun's disappearance unfolded, a person of interest emerged from within his own family. His cousin, Deonte Baber, who had traveled with him to Louisiana, came under suspicion. The investigation took a significant turn when, in an unrelated case, Deonte was charged with and later convicted of a murder that occurred in March 2017. Following his conviction and sentencing to nineteen years to life in prison, authorities publicly named him a person of interest in Jautoun's disappearance. Police discovered that two weeks after Jautoun vanished, Deonte was found driving the car Jautoun had been using. This, coupled with the timeline of events, has led investigators to believe he may have information regarding his cousin's whereabouts. Despite these developments, no charges have been filed in connection with Jautoun's case, and his disappearance remains unsolved, leaving his family to grapple with the pain of not knowing what happened to him.
