Joseph Bushling, a 26-year-old Army Specialist stationed at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah, was last seen on May 8, 2011. That evening, he called a friend and reported that he had run out of gas while driving a borrowed 2001 Mitsubishi Lancer in the desert near Granite Mountain. He mentioned he was cold, had lost his shoes, and was using his t-shirt to cover his feet. He was attempting to walk back to the Dugway base but was never heard from again.
Six days after his disappearance, Bushling's car was found abandoned in a remote ravine, 64 miles from the base. His hat and flip-flops were later discovered several miles from the car, but no other trace of him has been found. Despite extensive searches in the rugged desert terrain, including areas with poor cell phone reception and treacherous conditions, Bushling remains missing. Investigators ruled out both suicide and foul play, and his death was later classified as exposure due to harsh weather conditions. His family has expressed doubts about the initial handling of the case and continues to seek closure.
Bushling was described as a dedicated soldier with plans to move to San Antonio and pursue a career in nursing, and his family does not believe he left voluntarily. His disappearance has left many unanswered questions regarding the circumstances of his final moments.
