On a late June day in 2011, 30-year-old Steven Martin Moline was in Clackamas County, Oregon, with plans to visit Bagby Hot Springs to celebrate his recent birthday. He was with four other people, described as acquaintances, in a Honda Accord, relying on Steven's sense of direction to navigate the roads in the Mount Hood National Forest. As evening approached, the group realized they were lost and low on fuel. An argument reportedly ensued when the others wanted to turn back, but Steven insisted on continuing. He then exited the vehicle, taking his military-style backpack, and began walking down the remote forest road. His companions said they waited for about half an hour, honking the horn, before leaving the area to find gas and cell service in Estacada, about 40 miles away. From there, the driver of the car, Ruth Lockwood, called the police to report that an acquaintance named "Steve" had walked off into the woods. Steven Moline has not been seen or heard from since that day, June 30, 2011. Steven's mother, Carol Degagne, has been vocal about her belief that foul play was involved in her son's disappearance. She described their relationship as very close, with daily phone calls or texts, and does not believe he would willingly cut off contact. She has questioned the account given by his companions, finding it hard to believe that her son, who had numerous health issues, would have simply walked off into the wilderness alone. Steven was 6 feet 8 inches tall, with black hair and blue eyes, and had distinctive tattoos on his hands that read "CASH" and "ONLY". He lived with several serious medical conditions, including epilepsy, which caused seizures and prevented him from driving, as well as HIV and hepatitis. These conditions often left him weak and tired, and his shoulders were prone to dislocation, making it unlikely he could travel far on foot. Although he had a history of drug use, he was reportedly in recovery at the time of his disappearance. The official investigation into Steven's disappearance faced early hurdles. When the driver initially reported the incident, she only knew his first name, which delayed the start of a formal search. The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office was not able to connect the report to Steven until his family officially reported him missing on July 12. A comprehensive search was finally conducted on July 16, involving over 50 people, ATVs, and search dogs, but no trace of Steven or his backpack was found. Investigators have stated that the accounts given by the individuals in the car with Steven have been consistent, and they have not found evidence of a crime. The case remains an active missing person investigation, leaving his family with unanswered questions about the final moments before he vanished. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance on that remote forest road remain unclear, a painful mystery for those who knew and loved the gentle and kind man who enjoyed painting and singing.
