Frank Wilson Johnson, a 17-year-old Boy Scout, went missing on September 17, 1961, during a hiking trip in Zion National Park's Virgin River Narrows near Springdale, Utah. Johnson was part of a group of 26 hikers from northern Utah who were caught in a sudden flash flood. The powerful floodwaters, described as running fifty times higher than normal, swept away several hikers, including Johnson and his best friend, Alvin Nelson.
While the bodies of three other hikers were found the following day, the remains of Johnson and Nelson were not immediately recovered. A search was conducted for about a week before being called off. In 2006, part of a skull was found along the Virgin River, and DNA testing in 2012 confirmed it belonged to Nelson. Johnson, however, remains missing, and his body is presumed to be somewhere in the canyon.
