In the small, picturesque town of Seward, Alaska, nestled between mountains and the sea, 22-year-old Mary Kathleen Thill disappeared on July 5, 1975. At the time, her husband was away, working on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, a common reality for many families in the region. On that Saturday, a friend gave Mary a ride into town, dropping her off at a local bakery with plans to do some shopping. She was later seen by another friend between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. near the waterfall on Lowell Point Road. After this last sighting, Mary Thill was never seen or heard from again. It was considered very uncharacteristic of her to leave without notifying anyone, leading friends and family to suspect foul play from the beginning.
The investigation into Mary's disappearance took a significant turn when authorities began to consider a potential link to Robert Hansen, a serial killer who was active in Alaska during that period. Hansen, who confessed to 17 murders and numerous rapes, was known to be in Seward on the weekend Mary vanished. Despite the strong suspicions and the passage of decades, Mary Thill's case remains unsolved. Robert Hansen died in prison in 2014, taking any potential confessions with him. According to one account from a former inmate, Hansen had admitted to killing Mary and disposing of her body in Resurrection Bay, but this was never officially confirmed.
