On a summer day in August 1977, 30-year-old Carolyn Louis Davidson was in Seward, Alaska, preparing to embark on a boat trip. Traveling with her were John Davidson, age 32, and Jesse Davidson, age 3. Their intended destination was Driftwood Bay. The group set out on their journey in a 16 to 18-foot skiff described as a heavy, flat-bottomed wooden boat, dark gray with a bluish tint, and equipped with two outboard motors.
