At the time of her disappearance, Isabel was going through a contentious divorce from her husband, Jesus Natividad Rodriguez, who had threatened her life if she attempted to take money from him during the settlement. Isabel had obtained a restraining order against Jesus shortly before she vanished, after a history of domestic issues between them.

Although Isabel's body was never found, authorities became suspicious of her husband's involvement when he was seen at her home on the day she went missing, in violation of the restraining order. Witnesses reported seeing Jesus near the property that day, and he was observed pressure-washing his vehicle soon after, which police later noted smelled of decomposition. Investigators believe Jesus killed Isabel at her home and attempted to dispose of her body on his farm by burning it, though extensive searches yielded no human remains.

Jesus was arrested in April 2002 and ultimately convicted of her murder in 2007 after several trials. Despite the conviction, Isabel's remains have never been located, and her case remains unresolved in terms of finding her body.
