While living in Florida, Beverli maintained sporadic contact with her mother, making collect calls, but often months would pass between them. Despite this erratic communication, she did return to visit her mother in Maryland for a few days early in 1983 before returning to Florida.
In early 1983, Beverli called her mother from Los Angeles, requesting money or a ticket to return home, but her mother refused, believing that the money would be used to fuel Beverli’s struggles with drug addiction. Shortly after, Beverli called again, stating that she had returned to Florida. The last confirmed contact with her mother occurred in May of that year. Afterward, her mother never heard from her again, and the only known trace of her was her Social Security activity from a fast food job in the Miami area in 1983.
Despite the unusual circumstances, Beverli’s mother never filed a missing person report, believing that law enforcement would not take the case seriously due to Beverli’s age, lifestyle, and frequent absences. However, friends of Beverli later contacted her mother, stating they had some of her belongings and had not seen her for an extended period.
