Joe Simon Miller, a 42-year-old employee of a power company, went missing on June 8, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. He was last seen working on a dam during a period of heavy rain when he and two colleagues were attempting to open floodgates. While they stood on a suspension bridge, part of the bridge collapsed.
