In the late winter of 1983, a young wife and mother named Mary Ann Etter vanished from her home in Fletcher, Oklahoma, leaving behind a mysterious and unsettling case that continues to baffle investigators. At 24 years old, Mary was last seen on February 22, 1983. On that evening, she had gone to the Skate-A-Thon skating rink in the nearby town of Lawton to celebrate her recent birthday. Between 11:00 p.m. and midnight, friends dropped her off at her residence in the 400 block of North Drive. As they pulled up to the house, they noticed it was dark, but a light suddenly came on inside as Mary approached the front door. Her friends witnessed her go inside and then drove away, unaware that this would be the last time anyone would see her. At the time of her disappearance, Mary's husband and their young son were away visiting his parents. Days after Mary was last seen, her brother and sister went to her home to check on her, only to find the house empty. While none of her personal belongings appeared to be missing, they discovered blood on the back porch, which they cleaned before alerting the authorities. It wasn't until two weeks after she was last seen that her father officially reported her missing to the Comanche County Sheriff's Office. In a frustrating setback to the investigation, the original missing persons report was lost, and a new one had to be filed in 1990. Sometime after her disappearance, clothing that may have been connected to her case was found in a dumpster in Fletcher and collected as evidence. The investigation into Mary's whereabouts grew cold over the years, with few leads to follow. A significant development in the case came in May 1991, when investigators executed a search warrant on the home Mary shared with her husband. Using Luminol, a chemical that detects the presence of blood, they uncovered a disturbing scene. A trail of blood was found leading from the front door, down a hallway, into the living room, and ending at the back of the house. Despite this discovery, no further evidence was found that could explain what happened to Mary. Her husband has since remarried and, as of some reports, continues to live in the same house. The case of Mary Ann Etter's disappearance is a perplexing one, marked by a strange sequence of events on the night she was last seen, the delayed reporting of her absence, and the subsequent discovery of evidence years later. The initial lack of concern from those close to her, the cleaning of potential evidence by her siblings, and the loss of the original police report all contributed to the difficulties in the investigation. To this day, her case remains unsolved, leaving her family and the community with unanswered questions about the fate of the young mother who vanished into the night.
