Arend Van Der Hoven, a 50-year-old man from Sarasota, Florida, went missing on July 8, 2012, while boating off the coast of Marathon, Florida. Known to friends as "Arnie," Van Der Hoven was last seen leaving the Blackfin Marina at 8:00 a.m. aboard his 21-foot center console boat. He had planned to return by 2:00 p.m., but when he did not arrive, the marina staff alerted the authorities.
A search was quickly launched by the U.S. Coast Guard. Hours later, Van Der Hoven's boat was found stranded about a mile south of Duck Key. However, there was no sign of him, and despite an extensive air and sea search, no trace of Van Der Hoven has ever been found. His disappearance remains unsolved, and he is presumed lost at sea.
At the time of his disappearance, Van Der Hoven was described as being 5'6", weighing between 150 and 180 pounds, with graying brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a green shirt, dark green cargo pants, and sandals. His case remains open, and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office continues to seek any information that could help provide closure.
