Nicole Waller, a 31-year-old mother of three, was last seen on February 14, 2013, after visiting her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Cody Johnston, in Fairview, Montana. She had traveled from her home in Kalispell to visit Johnston and was last heard from when she told family and friends that she was returning home. On the same day, her maroon Ford Expedition was found abandoned along Highway 2 near Poplar, Montana, with her belongings, including her pet guinea pigs, still inside the vehicle.
Her keys were left in the ignition, and the car was found locked.
Waller's disappearance was quickly deemed suspicious, and Johnston became the prime suspect. Their relationship had been troubled, and in the days leading up to her disappearance, Waller had confronted Johnston about his infidelity. Investigators discovered that Johnston had asked friends to help move Waller's car and even requested that they send fake messages from her Facebook account to make it seem like she was alive. Phone records further implicated Johnston, showing he had lied about his whereabouts on the day she vanished.
Despite Waller's body never being recovered, Johnston was arrested in 2015 and convicted of her murder in 2016. He was sentenced to life in prison for her murder, plus ten additional years for evidence tampering.
