In the early spring of 1963, a 20-year-old U.S. Navy sailor named Jerry 'Pee Wee' Francis Liberty was on leave from the St. Albans Naval Hospital in Long Island. He was in the South Glens Falls, New York area, receiving treatment for a hand injury. On March 7th, 1963, his leave came to an end, and he began his journey to report back to the hospital.
