She was last seen leaving her job at the Ranch House restaurant at 1:30 a.m. with her estranged husband, James "T-Bone" Edwards. Witnesses saw them walking towards a nearby lounge, but Iva was never heard from again. Her estranged husband later claimed to have dropped her off at her apartment and denied any involvement in her disappearance, despite failing a polygraph test.
Iva had a tumultuous relationship with James, marked by domestic abuse and the abuse of their children, which had led her to leave him earlier that year. She was living with her daughter and grandson at the time and had started a new job and a relationship with another man. On the night of her disappearance, her daughter, who had seen James waiting in the parking lot, feared for their safety, but Iva reassured her that she would be fine.
