Daniel Lynn Campbell, a 41-year-old man from Big Timber, Montana, has been missing since April 6, 1991, after he was dropped off by a friend at the Hellroaring Creek trailhead within Yellowstone National Park. An experienced outdoorsman, Campbell was accompanied by his one-year-old Australian Shepherd-Blue Heeler mix dog, Freckles. He was reportedly planning a multi-day hike through the park to Jardine, Montana, a distance of about 30 miles. His girlfriend was scheduled to pick him up in Jardine on April 8, 1991, but he never arrived at the designated meeting point. When he failed to appear, he was reported missing, prompting an extensive search effort. Campbell was known to be a skilled logger and pole cutter who was very familiar with the wilderness of Yellowstone.
The purpose of Campbell's trek into the park was reportedly to retrieve elk antlers he had previously collected and stashed.
