In early 2004, Mary Ann Mergel, a 65-year-old woman originally from New Jersey, made the decision to move back to her home state. She had relocated to a double-wide mobile home in Chatsworth, Georgia, to be closer to her son, Paul Mergel, and her grandchildren. Her husband required specialized medical care that was unavailable in Georgia, prompting her to place him in a New Jersey nursing facility, which she visited monthly.
