Kieran Murphy, a 58-year-old resident of San Francisco, was last seen on December 15, 2001. He and his estranged wife, Ornaith Murphy, had been going through a difficult divorce, and on the day of his disappearance, they were supposed to meet to discuss legal matters. Kieran, a mathematician employed by the city of San Francisco, was last seen near the Oakland Marina at Jack London Square, where Ornaith's boat, the *Sola III*, was berthed. Witnesses reported hearing loud noises near the boat that evening, although it was unclear if these were gunshots.
The following day, December 16, Ornaith was seen working on the boat and later called her niece, saying she was in Berkeley. The *Sola III* was captured on security footage leaving the marina on the night of December 15, and both Kieran and Ornaith have not been heard from since. The sailboat, which was not equipped for long-distance sailing and had only a week's worth of food onboard, also disappeared and has never been found.
Theories surrounding their disappearance range from an accidental incident at sea to a possible murder-suicide, but no concrete evidence has surfaced to confirm any of these. Neither of their bank accounts or credit cards have been used since they went missing, and the case remains unsolved. Despite extensive searches by the U.S. Coast Guard and other authorities, no trace of the couple or the boat has been found.
