This delay has been a point of contention and added to the family's distress. Once notified, the Coast Guard launched an extensive search effort, involving MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews, the Cutter Naushon, and a 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Station Ketchikan. They scoured over 352 square miles of the Inside Passage, a challenging task given the vast and remote nature of the Alaskan waters. Despite their efforts in clear weather with calm seas, the search was suspended after nearly 24 hours without any sign of Blake. In the years that have passed, the lack of concrete evidence has made the case particularly baffling. The prevailing theory is that Blake may have accidentally fallen overboard, yet no witnesses or surveillance footage have surfaced to confirm this. The cruise line stated that no video was available to explain his disappearance. Months after he went missing, his mother received a U.S. Coast Guard investigative report that offered no definitive conclusions and only included a single, blurry surveillance image of a person on deck whose face was obscured. This lack of transparency has been a source of immense pain for the Kepley family, who have advocated for better overboard detection systems on cruise ships.
