In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 5, 2014, a 15-year-old boy named Richard “Kalani” Vierra set out for a solo hike near his home in Waianae, Hawaii. He began his trek around 6:30 a.m. on the Kamaileuna Ridge Trail, a path familiar to locals but known for its rugged and unforgiving terrain.
