In the spring of 2015, in Flint, Michigan, a two-year-old girl named Kimora Simon was last seen. For a year and a half, her absence from the world went unnoticed, at least officially. The circumstances of her life were already precarious, living in an apartment complex with her mother. It wasn't until November of 2016 that the first threads of this hidden tragedy began to unravel. A teacher, concerned about suspicious marks on Kimora's five-year-old brother, filed a child abuse report. This single act of vigilance set in motion an investigation that would uncover a devastating secret. When an employee from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services visited the family's home, they realized Kimora was not there and began to ask questions. Initially, Kimora's mother, Erika Shantae Finley, claimed the little girl was with her father, Khairy Joshuawon Simon, in Detroit. However, this was quickly proven to be a lie. Further investigation revealed a pattern of deception and conflicting stories from both parents. Relatives confirmed they had not seen Kimora in over a year. As the inquiry deepened, a horrifying truth emerged from the parents' confessions: Kimora had been beaten to death. Her parents admitted to the brutal act, which they said occurred after a toilet training accident. They then wrapped her small body in a white plastic trash bag and carried her away from the apartment in a backpack. The investigation led to the arrests of both Erika Finley and Khairy Simon. They faced multiple charges, including felony murder, child abuse, evidence tampering, and lying to the police. Finley was also charged with welfare fraud for continuing to collect public assistance for Kimora long after she was gone, totaling $7,300. In the summer of 2018, both parents entered into plea agreements. Khairy Simon pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, and Erika Finley pleaded no contest to the same charge. Khairy Simon stated that Finley had repeatedly struck Kimora with her fist and an extension cord. Khairy claimed to have buried his daughter's body in a shallow grave near a set of railroad tracks by their apartment complex. Despite extensive searches, Kimora's remains have never been found. Authorities believe it is possible that her body was disturbed by animals. This case is a heartbreaking story of a young life cut short, a disappearance that went unnoticed for too long, and a search for justice and closure that remains, in some ways, incomplete without the recovery of Kimora's body.
