Joseph "Skyler" Burnley, a 27-year-old man from Rankin County, Mississippi, went missing on June 3, 2016. On the day of his disappearance, Burnley was helping his friend, Travis Brewer, and Brewer’s girlfriend, Amanda Morris, search for Brewer’s stolen truck. The vehicle had been taken from Brewer’s driveway, and his phone was reportedly inside. The group used a tracking feature to locate the phone in a wooded area outside Brandon, Mississippi.
Burnley and Brewer split up to search, with Morris staying behind in the car with her child.
Surveillance footage captured Burnley at a nearby gas station around 9:48 a.m. that day. Brewer eventually returned without Burnley and found the truck abandoned, but the phone was missing. Despite their search efforts, Burnley was not located, and his friends waited 15 hours before reporting him missing. Days later, Brewer’s phone was discovered near his house, not in the area they had claimed to be searching.
Burnley’s case is considered suspicious, with authorities treating it as a potential homicide. Brewer became a person of interest, and authorities believe a local gang, the Simon City Royals, may have been involved. There are allegations that Burnley may have been killed in retaliation for stealing drugs.
